Fall is the last good window to wash your house in Howard County. Once it gets cold and wet, the green and black stuff on your siding just sits there all winter and gets worse.
Look at the north side of your house first. That’s where shade and damp hold on to algae and mildew. Check around the downspouts, under the eaves, and along the bottom couple feet of the siding too. If it looks green or streaky now, it won’t look better in March.
Leaves are the other thing. Wet leaves packed against siding, decks and walkways leave stains and keep the spot damp. Clear them off before you wash, and again after.
Roofs are worth a look while the leaves are down. Black streaks on shingles are algae. Left alone they spread, and the roof holds heat and moisture longer. Most roofs do fine with a soft wash every 3 to 5 years. Shaded roofs under trees tend to show it sooner. Roof cleaning is done at very low pressure, so it doesn’t beat up the shingles the way a pressure washer would.
Do you need to wash everything? No. Pick the spots that bug you most. Front of the house, the driveway, the walkway to the door. Those are what people see when they pull up.
